Tribute to General José de San Martín in New York

The Consulate General of the Argentine Republic in New York paid tribute to General José de San Martín on the 176th anniversary of his passing, with a ceremony held on August 17 at his monument in Central Park.

The event brought together Argentine authorities, members of the consular corps, and representatives of the Argentine community. During the ceremony, the Argentine National Anthem was performed and a floral wreath was laid at the foot of the monument in memory of the Father of the Nation and Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

Among those in attendance were Ambassador Francisco Tropepi, Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations; Colonel Gustavo Oliver, Defense Attaché; and Major Commander Pablo Fioramonti, Police Advisor, both serving at the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations.

The ceremony was also honored by the presence of Oswaldo del Águila Ramírez, Consul General of Peru in New York, whose participation held particular significance in commemorating San Martín’s continental legacy. As Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, San Martín’s life and achievements remain deeply intertwined with the shared history of our nations and with the broader struggle for independence and freedom across South America.

In his remarks, Consul General Diaz Bartolomé recalled San Martín’s courage, military genius, and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom, which made possible one of the most extraordinary achievements in our nation’s history. He also emphasized that San Martín’s legacy extends far beyond his military victories, standing as an enduring example of leadership, integrity, selflessness, and a profound sense of duty.

Addressing Argentines living in New York and throughout the Consulate’s jurisdiction, the Consul General underscored that, through their work, efforts, and everyday contributions, they too help represent Argentina abroad. He noted that San Martín’s example reminds us of the importance of preserving, even far from home, our ties to Argentina, our sense of community, and our commitment to contributing, from wherever we may be, to building a better country.

The ceremony took place at the historic equestrian monument to San Martín in Central Park, which keeps his memory alive in the heart of New York and stands as an enduring symbol of Argentina’s presence and ties with the city.
