“Guastavino in my Heart”: An Evening of Argentine Music in New York

The Consulate General and Promotion Center of Argentina in New York hosted on December 18, 2025, a special evening of music and shared cultural heritage with the recital Guastavino en el Alma – Guastavino in My Heart” presented in collaboration with Opera Hispánica, the premier performing arts organization dedicated to empowering Latin artists and preserving Spanish and Latin vocal traditions.

The concert paid tribute to Carlos Guastavino, one of Argentina’s most beloved composers, often referred to as the Schubert of South America. The program featured emblematic works such as Santa Fe para llorar and Pueblito, mi pueblo, highlighting Guastavino’s lyrical voice and deep connection to Argentine identity.

The recital brought together an outstanding group of artists. Jorge Parodi, General and Artistic Director of Opera Hispánica, served as pianist. He is also Music Director of the Moores Opera Center at the University of Houston and a member of the faculty at The Juilliard School.

The ensemble included performers Jeremías Sergiani-Velázquez, Principal Second Violin of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, born in Córdoba, Argentina; Morena La Vecchia Galán, Argentine mezzosoprano currently performing with the Metropolitan Opera; and Katie Althen-Velázquez, an award-winning flutist and educator recognized for her expressive artistry and commitment to expanding access to classical music.

The evening celebrated Argentine musical heritage as a living bond between Argentina and the international community, and reaffirmed the role of the Consulate General as a Promotion Center  as an open space for encounter, dialogue, and the dissemination of our culture, as well as for highlighting the valuable contributions of Argentine and Latin American artists abroad.
