On Wednesday, June 24, the official unveiling of "Argentina Way" took place, marking the permanent co-naming of the block on West 56th Street in Manhattan where the Consulate General and Promotion Center of the Argentine Republic in New York is located.

The initiative, proposed by the Consulate General and Promotion Center of the Argentine Republic in New York and approved by the New York City Council, recognizes nearly eight decades of Argentina's presence at its historic headquarters and celebrates the deep bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual understanding between Argentina and the City of New York.

The ceremony was led by Pablo Quirno, Argentina’s Foreign Minister. Following welcoming remarks by Consul General Ambassador Gerardo (Gerry) Díaz Bartolomé, the speakers included Kathy Eagen, Regional Director of the Office of Foreign Missions (New York Branch), U.S. Department of State; Fernanda Pérez Villarreal, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of the Office for International Affairs of the City of New York; Council Member Virginia Maloney, who championed the initiative together with her predecessor, Keith Powers; and, as the keynote speaker, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno.

The event also brought together representatives of these institutions, members of the consular corps accredited in New York, business leaders, cultural figures, and members of the Argentine community.

Throughout their remarks, all speakers emphasized the symbolic significance of "Argentina Way" as a permanent expression of the friendship between Argentina and New York City. They also recognized the longstanding contribution of the Argentine community to the city's economic, cultural, and social life, while underscoring the role of the Consulate General as a bridge between both countries and as a gathering place for the Argentine community.

In his welcoming remarks, Consul General Díaz Bartolomé noted that the designation of "Argentina Way" represents a lasting recognition of Argentina's historic presence in New York and of the enduring friendship between the two countries. He also highlighted that the event forms part of the program leading to the 80th anniversary of Argentina's presence at its historic headquarters, which will be commemorated in 2027.

In his address, Foreign Minister Quirno stated that the inclusion of Argentina's name on the map of New York recognizes the role the country has played in the city for decades, as well as the work carried out by the Consulate General as a platform for the promotion of trade, investment, culture, tourism, and innovation. He also highlighted Argentina's ongoing transformation and New York's strategic role as a meeting point between Argentine talent and the world's leading centers of investment, technology, and business. 

Referring to President Javier Milei's foreign policy priorities, he underscored that the strategic partnership with the United States is a cornerstone of Argentina's international engagement and reaffirmed that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared values of freedom, initiative, and opportunity, creating new avenues for cooperation and prosperity for both nations.

Addressing the Argentine community, Foreign Minister Quirno praised the daily contribution of Argentines living in New York to the country's international projection and reaffirmed that the Consulate would continue to be their home. In that regard, he stated: "Argentina Way will now be another point of encounter. A sign in the city, yes. Also a symbol of presence, pride, and continuity." Later, he added: "Tonight, we unveil more than a plaque. We affirm a bond between two nations, a bridge between two communities, and a promise about the Argentina we are determined to build."

The ceremony concluded with the official unveiling of the "Argentina Way" street sign, which will permanently identify the block where the Consulate General of the Argentine Republic in New York is located.

The Consulate General expresses its sincere gratitude to the New York City Council, especially Council Member Virginia Maloney, for championing this initiative, as well as to the Office of Foreign Missions of the U.S. Department of State and the Mayor's Office for International Affairs of the City of New York for their continued support and collaboration.

The inauguration of "Argentina Way" marks a new milestone in the history of Argentina's presence in New York and reaffirms the Consulate General's commitment to strengthening the ties between Argentina, New York City, the United States, and the Argentine community.
